The Dive Shop has been in operation since 1989. The shop originally opened in the 5 Points Mall in Bountiful, Utah; after three years there we moved to several locations in Bountiful before arriving at our current location at 429 West 500 South. In addition to being the foremost scuba school in Utah and holding a 5 Star Rating with Scuba Diving International, The Dive Shop also has a “quality, not quantity” attitude when it comes to dive training. The owners, Bob Stell and Mac Garrabrants have over 75 years of combined experience in diving and are dedicated to advancement of the sport. All classes are taught by in-house instructors to guarantee quality and performance. MEET THE TEAM

Our staff are the heart of The Dive Shop.

Bob

Owner / Instructor

Bob learned to dive in 1984 and became an instructor in 2004. He was named Instructor of the year in 2011 and 2012, and is an instructor for Open Water, Rescue, Nitrox, and a variety of specialty courses, Technical Diver, and Public Safety Diver. Bob served 30 years in the Bountiful and South Davis Fire Departments, and is certified to teach First Aid, CPR, and Oxygen Administration.

Mac

Owner / Instructor

Mac began diving when he was 10 years old, inspired by “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau” and “Sea Hunt”. He certified in 1970 in the cold lakes of Spokane Washington, then moved to Seattle and later southern California. He has dived in Micronesia, Caribbean, Spain, Japan, Thailand, Bali, and Western Australia. Mac served 21 years in the U.S. Marine Corps prior to coming to Utah.

John

Instructor Trainer

John has been a Scuba instructor since 1991 and has certified over 2,000 students, earning the Top Certifying Instructor award for the Western U.S. in 2004. He holds certification as an SDI Instructor, Instructor Trainer, TDI Instructor, and IT Staff Instructor Trainer and has 13 instructor specialties. He co-authored and published manuals for both Open Water Student and Advanced Open Water diving.

Cameron

Scuba Instructor

Cameron loves the outdoors. When he is not diving, you can find him in the mountains fishing, hunting, camping or skiing. Cameron started diving in 1999. His favorite place to dive so far is Roatan, Honduras at a location called Mary’s Place. He became an Instructor in 2014. He loves helping others to learn new skills that help them overcome their fears of the water.

Steve

Scuba Instructor

Steve started diving in May of 1994 as a result of a birthday present. He fell in love with diving when at his first class, and it soon became his passion. His first open water dive was in the aquarium at the Living Seas, at the EPCOT center in Disney World. He became a Divemaster in the spring of 2000, and became an instructor in May 2005.He loves sharing his passion of the sea and of scuba diving with his students.

Glen

Instructor Trainer

Glen learned to dive in 1982, became a Scuba instructor in 1984, and an instructor trainer in 1996. His experience on Police dive teams helps to keep students in line. He loves wreck diving and his favorite dive location is Fiji.

Jessica

Scuba Instructor

Jessica has been diving since 2016 and quickly worked up the ranks to Instructor by 2018. 

Justin

Scuba Instructor

Justin learned to dive when he was 15.  His dad wanted to get certified and this was a way they could go diving and spend quality time together. He likes the tranquility and wonder of the underwater world.  His favorite dive spots are the Dominican Republic, Hawaii, Catalina, the Keys and everywhere with reef and colorful fishes.

Kacy

Scuba Instructor

Kacy grew up in Miami and started diving as a teenager. The Florida Keys were her playground and she considers herself a citizen of the Conch Republic. She completed her Instructor certification in the cold waters of California. Kacy is pursuing dive medicine as a career and is especially interested in using scuba diving as recreational water therapy for disabled divers.

James

Scuba Instructor

James dove for a couple years beginning in 1973 in southern California. He returned to diving in 2016 with The Dive Shop and became a Divemaster in 2019. He went through what he calls his “intensive scuba boot camp”—30 days of full-time training to become an instructor—in Bali, Indonesia early in 2020. He has dived in California, Florida, Hawaii, Cayman Islands, Roatan, St Thomas, Zanzibar, and of course, Bali.

Russ

Scuba Instructor

Russ is retired US Air Force who has loved Scuba diving since 1977. After retirement, he began a VA sponsored Instructor training program and completed the program in 2020. His favorite dive location (“so far”) is Catalina, CA and is looking forward to helping student discover the thrill of breathing underwater!  

Jerry

Divemaster

Jerry originally certified in 1983 in Germany, but after a year diving in cold, murky German lakes he stopped diving, picking diving back up in 2008. After advancing to Divemaster he spent much of his time assisting instructors and repairing equipment. He loves the feeling of freedom, the opportunity to explore and find something new and exciting.

Bob

Divemaster

Bob began his diving career in 2004, and was claims he was completely hooked before he finished his first open water dive at Blue Lake! He is thrilled that his wife loves to dive as well and can’t wait until his daughter is old enough to join in! He has been diving in Fiji, Hawaii, the Bahamas, Mexico and California. His passion is under-water photography – especially sharks!

Floyd

Divemaster

Floyd learned to dive in the summer of 2007 and became a Divemaster in 2011. He has been diving is a wide variety of locations, including Hawaii, Guam, Honduras, the Bahamas, Grand Cayman, San Clemente Island, and the Disney World aquarium.

Jessica

Divemaster

Jessica became a Scuba diver in the winter of 2012 when she was a grad student and though it would be a fun class to motivate her while she was writing her thesis. She likes the weightless feeling while exploring underwater. Her favorite dive spot is Kauai, Hawaii.

Tony

Divemaster

Tony and his daughter started with the discover scuba class and fell in love with the idea of scuba diving – they certified in January of 2017 and “we haven’t looked back”.  His first big trip was to the Florida Keys, then it was Catalina Island, Sulpher Creek, Fontenelle Reservoir, Lost Creek, East Canyon, Meadow Hot Springs, Sand Hollow, The Crater, and Blue Lake. Tony is working on achieving the Assistant Instructor certification. Interesting fact: Tony is bullet resistant.

Jenn

Divemaster

Jennifer originally came to The Dive Shop as a University of Utah student for her Open water certification in May and her Advanced in chilly December of 2018 . Inspired to learn more and do better she completed her Rescue Diver in April of 2019 and moved on to become a Divemaster in October of 2019. She loves camping, scuba and stand up paddleboards. She is currently working towards her Advanced EMT certification and her Assistant Instructor for The Dive Shop.

Mandy

Divemaster

Mandy learned to Scuba dive in 2018 and immediately “caught fire” – advancing quickly through Advanced and Rescue certifications, and completed her Divemaster certification in 2019. She plans to study Marine Biology in the near future.

Maddie

Divemaster

Maddie learned to dive in 2015 in South Africa, and since has worked her way up to Divemaster by way of the Philippines, Thailand, and Mexico. She is qualified as an Eco-Scientific Divemaster, focusing on coastal ecology and training and is a certified EMT.

Aaron

Divemaster

Aaron started diving in 2017 and fell in love with it right away. Since then he has recorded over 100 dives. He enjoys showing other divers how fun and awesome diving is as a hobby. His “all time favorite dives” are the Cenotes of Central Mexico near Playa Del Carmen.

JB

Divemaster Candidate

JB is working on his Divemaster certification.

Sierra

Divemaster Candidate

Sierra learned to dive at age 14 in Anchorage, AK and can be found rock climbing, back country skiing, and camping in her spare time. She came to UT for an air quality consulting job after working with giant snails on the Great Barrier Reef. Her favorite marine animal is the turtle.
