Advanced Buoyancy Class
Good buoyancy is what separates comfortable divers from struggling ones. This class helps you get it right.
You'll learn to control your buoyancy in any position in the water. The payoff is less effort, better air use and more time underwater.
It's $100. Call us at (801) 295-5445 or stop by to book.

Why buoyancy matters
When you're properly weighted and in control, everything about diving gets easier. SDI points to a few big benefits:
- You protect marine life and the reef
- You get less tired
- You use less air, so you can stay down longer
- You take better photos and video
What you'll learn
- When to check your buoyancy (after gear or environment changes, after a break from diving, and on every dive)
- What changes your buoyancy, including added gear, your cylinder getting lighter as you breathe, your suit, and your body position
- How to weight yourself for different exposure suits
- How to make your gear and body position more streamlined
- How to kick more efficiently
- How to do a standard buoyancy check
What you'll do in the water
- Put your gear together and do a pre-dive check
- Do a buoyancy check with a nearly empty cylinder, then adjust your weight
- Repeat the check with a full cylinder
- Make a controlled descent
- Hover, including fine-tuning with your breathing and your BCD
- Practice moving close to the bottom without touching it
- Finish with an ascent and a hovering safety stop
- Log your dive, including how much weight you used
SDI says this course can be taught entirely in a pool.
Who can take it
SDI asks that you:
- Be an SDI Open Water Scuba Diver, SDI Junior Open Water Diver, or equivalent
- Be at least 18, or 10 with parental consent
Junior divers aged 10 to 14 must dive with a parent, guardian or dive professional after certification.
How this fits with other training
SDI counts this course as one specialty rating toward its Advanced Diver Development program. Curious how that works with our Advanced Diver course? Ask your instructor.

Will it really help me use less air?
Better buoyancy control means less effort in the water, and SDI lists lower air use and longer bottom time among the benefits.
Do I need to be in open water?
Not necessarily. SDI says the course can be taught entirely in a pool. Ask us how we'd set it up for you.
What do I need before I sign up?
SDI asks for an Open Water Scuba Diver certification (or Junior Open Water, or equivalent), and a minimum age of 18, or 10 with parental consent.
