How the Advanced Course Works
Two classroom sessions and six open water dives. Here's how it fits together.
1. Classroom sessions
You come in for two evening sessions from 7 to 10 pm. One covers deep diving and computer diving. The other covers underwater navigation and night diving. Pick the start date that works for you.
2. Open water dives
Your six open water dives are scheduled during class. We run them at Blue Lake near Wendover, and at other locations by special arrangement with your instructor.
3. Your certification
Once you've logged your 25th dive, stop by The Dive Shop with your logbook and we'll present your SDI Advanced Scuba Diver certification. Dives you do in this class count toward that 25.

What's included in the $350
- Your books and course materials
- Gear rental for the class and your open water dives
The only extra costs are your own transportation, food and lodging for the open water dives, plus any extra skills you add.
Gear you need
At a minimum, bring your own mask, fins and snorkel, a signal device, and a dive slate. You'll also need two basic tools every advanced diver carries: a finger reel and a surface marker buoy (SMB).
We provide the signal device (a whistle). If you need a slate, finger reel or SMB, you can pick them up in our store. You'll use the slate in class during navigation training.
Who can take it
To complete the course, you need:
- Your Open Water Scuba Diver certification
- Completion of the four specialty areas
- At least 25 total logged dives (dives in this class count)
Before your first class
Everyone fills out a liability release and medical form before the first class. Students under 18 need a parent or guardian to sign too.

- Physician's Form (only needed if you answer yes to any medical question)
- Guidelines for your doctor (SDI's guide for physicians who don't see much diving medicine)
If you do need the physician's form, get it signed before you get in the water and bring it to class.
Cancellations and rescheduling
We can't refill a seat once a class is close, so here's how it works. Cancel or reschedule more than 7 days before your scheduled event and you get a full refund or a free reschedule. Within 7 days, there's a $35 fee.
What's next?
Once you have your Advanced certification, 40 logged dives, and current CPR, first aid and oxygen cards, you're ready for our Rescue Diver course.

How much does the Advanced Diver course cost?
The course is $350. That covers your books and your gear rental. You only pay extra for your own transportation, food and lodging for the open water dives, and for any additional skills you choose to add.
How is the course set up?
There are two classroom sessions in the evening, from 7 to 10 pm, and six open water dives that are scheduled during class. The dives take place at Blue Lake near Wendover or at other locations arranged with your instructor.
Do I need 25 dives before I start?
You need 25 logged dives to earn the SDI Advanced Scuba Diver certification, and the dives you do as part of the class count toward that total. When you reach 25, bring your logbook to The Dive Shop and we'll present your certification.
What do I need to take the course?
You need your Open Water Scuba Diver certification, and you need to complete the four specialty areas (night, navigation, deep and computer diving). Bring your own mask, fins and snorkel, a signal device and a dive slate, plus a finger reel and surface marker buoy.
Where can I buy a slate, finger reel or SMB?
Right here at The Dive Shop. We also provide the signal device (whistle) for you.
Can I add other specialties?
Yes. You can add skills like underwater photography and videography, dry suit, ice diving, search and recovery, altitude and boat diving, or enriched air Nitrox. Additional fees apply, and your instructor can walk you through the options.
Is there a medical form?
Yes. Everyone fills out a liability release and medical questionnaire before the first class. If you answer yes to any medical question, your physician needs to sign the physician's form before you get in the water. If your doctor doesn't know much about diving medicine, SDI has guidelines you can hand them.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
More than 7 days before your scheduled event, you get a full refund if you cancel and a free reschedule. Within 7 days, there's a $35 fee, because we can't refill the seat.
What comes after Advanced?
The next step is the Rescue Diver course. You'll need your Advanced certification, at least 40 logged dives, and current CPR, first aid and oxygen cards.
