What to expect
Belmont Hot Springs sits beside the Malad River north of Salt Lake City. The river is heated by geothermal springs, which means you can dive here when the lakes are cold.
The group meets, dives together and hangs out afterward. It's an easy, friendly day and a good one for newer divers.
About the dive site
- Depth: up to 35 feet in the main pond
- Size: a pond of over 2 acres
- Visibility: about 10 feet
- Bottom: clay and sand, with training platforms at 3 and 20 feet
- Altitude: about 4,400 feet
According to PADI, a green algae called kara forms mounds up to 5 feet tall on the bottom in cooler months, and small aquarium fish live there. The platforms keep divers off the bottom so the silt stays put.
Good to know
- The site has locker rooms with showers, an enclosed cafe and a meeting area.
- PADI lists no scuba rentals or air fills at the site, so plan to arrive with your gear and full tanks, or ask us about rentals.
- PADI says winter access is by appointment only, so check before heading out on your own.
- At 4,400 feet, it's an altitude dive. Set your dive computer for altitude.
Frequently asked questions
What is a dive along?
It's a group dive day with The Dive Shop. We meet up, dive together and count it toward your Red Shorts Challenge passport.
Why is the water warm?
The Malad River at Belmont Hot Springs is heated by geothermal springs, so the pond stays comfortable and diveable year-round.
How deep is it?
The main pond is up to 35 feet deep, and it's over 2 acres in size. Because it's at 4,400 feet, it's an altitude dive.
What's the visibility like?
About 10 feet, according to PADI. It's a pond, not a reef, so the fun is in the warm water and the company.
Can I rent gear there?
PADI says the site doesn't rent scuba gear or fill air. Bring your own, or ask us about rentals before the trip.
Does this count toward the Red Shorts Challenge?
Yes, it's a Red Shorts Challenge dive along. You'll need to actually dive, and a Dive Shop rep will stamp your passport.
