What to expect

We start at 10 am with a pre-dive briefing at the Flaming Gorge Dam Visitor Center parking lot. Then we head to the water together.

Flaming Gorge is a large reservoir on the Green River, and the red canyon walls around it are a big part of its appeal.

The diving

One dive operator that runs trips here, Diventures, describes a few kinds of dives at Flaming Gorge:

  • Shore entry: an easy, shallow entry (less than 40 feet) with fish, good for all levels.
  • Near the dam: deeper rock formations.
  • Canyon dive: a more challenging dive under a bridge down the road, which needs extended range (XR) training.

Diventures also reports that the water is about 70°F near the surface, in the high 50s from about 40 to 70 feet, and colder below that. A 7 mm wetsuit or a dry suit is a good idea. Our Dry Suit course is a good place to start if you haven't tried one.

Plan for

  • Mountain lake diving at altitude. Set your dive computer for it.
  • Cold water at depth. Dress for it.
  • A long day out of town. Bring food, water and sun protection.

Frequently asked questions

Where do we meet?

At 10 am in the parking lot of the Flaming Gorge Dam Visitor Center, for the pre-dive briefing.

Does this count toward the Red Shorts Challenge?

Yes. It's a Red Shorts Challenge dive. You need to actually dive, and a Dive Shop rep will stamp your passport.

How cold is the water?

Around 70°F at the surface, in the high 50s from about 40 to 70 feet, and colder deeper, according to one operator that dives here. Dress warmly.

Is it good for newer divers?

The shore entry is shallow and easy, and suitable for all levels. The canyon dive is more challenging and needs extended range training.

Do I need a dry suit?

Not required, but many divers prefer one or a thick wetsuit. Ask us what we recommend, and about our Dry Suit course.
