Learning to Scuba Dive Is Fun, Exciting, and Safe
Mac Garrabrants Oct 16, 2026
Scuba diving sounds like something for other people. Braver people. Fitter people. People who grew up near the ocean.
It isn't. If you are comfortable in the water and willing to learn, you can do this. Here is what it is really like.
It's fun
You breathe underwater. You float. You drift slowly through a world most people never see.
Two-thirds of the planet is covered in water. Once you are certified, you get a front-row seat.
It is social, too. You learn alongside other people, and you come away with dive buddies, stories, and a good reason to plan your next trip.
It's exciting
The first breath underwater is a big moment. You will remember it.
After that, the options open up. Dive close to home in Utah. Join one of our group trips to places like Fiji, Palau, and Raja Ampat. Take a camera down with you. Or just float over a reef and watch.
It's safe, because of how you learn
Scuba has real risks, like any adventure sport. Good training is how you manage them. Here is how it works:
- You learn the skills in a pool first, before you ever dive in open water.
- A real instructor is with you, teaching and watching.
- You learn to check your own gear and your buddy's gear.
- You learn to always dive with a buddy, never alone.
- You practice what to do if something goes wrong, so it is not new to you if it ever happens.
We teach through SDI, one of the major scuba training agencies. Your certification is recognized at dive sites around the world.
What the course looks like
You have a few ways to go, depending on how you like to learn.
Open Water Diver course. This is the classic option. You learn with an instructor in the room. If you like asking questions and learning in person, this is for you.
Online Open Water course. You do the book part online, on your own schedule, then come in to the shop for the hands-on training. It is a good fit if you have a busy calendar.
Certification dives. After your pool training, you finish with your open water dives to earn your card.
Not sure yet? Try it first.
Discover Scuba is a quick introduction to breathing underwater with an instructor. It costs $35. You will know pretty fast whether this is your thing.
