What happens on your Discover Scuba night
You'll start with a short classroom session on how scuba gear works and what to expect underwater. Then you head to the pool for your first breaths underwater, with a certified instructor guiding you the whole way.
It's all done in the shallow end, so you can relax and just enjoy it. Sessions run on Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 10 pm.
What you'll learn
Discover Scuba is part learning, part doing. You'll get a simple overview of:
- How pressure and buoyancy work underwater
- How to equalize your ears
- The marine environment, and the kinds of sea life divers see
- How scuba gear goes together
- How divers talk to each other underwater
What you'll do in the pool
You'll practice some of the same skills real divers use, including:
- Breathing from a regulator, and clearing and recovering it
- Clearing water from your mask
- Using your fins to move through the water
- Using your BCD (the vest that helps you float or sink)
- Controlling your buoyancy, plus controlled descents and ascents
- Using your gauges and a dive computer
- Hand signals for talking without words

- Age: 18 or older, or 10 and up with parental consent

How much does it cost and how long does it take?
It's $35 for one evening. Sessions run Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 10 pm, with classroom time and pool time.
Do I need to know how to swim?
You need adequate swimming skills and to feel comfortable in the water. That's the standard SDI sets for this program. If you're not sure, call us at (801) 295-5445 and we'll help you figure it out.

Can I study ahead of time?
Yes. SDI has a free eLearning course you can do from home, before or after your Discover Scuba night. It's optional.
Will this help me decide on the Open Water course?
